25 questions we have entering the 2024 Iowa high school football season in the Ames area

The 2024 Iowa high school football season will be upon us in less than one month.

Colo-NESCO gets an early start with an IHSAA football home game against Twin Cedars on Friday, Aug. 23. The other Ames Tribune-area teams — Ames, Ballard, Collins-Maxwell, Gilbert, Nevada and Roland-Story — all begin play on Friday, Aug. 30.

Here are 25 questions for all seven area high school football teams heading into the 2024 season

1. With Tom Crowden taking over as the new head coach, can Ames make a run at the 5A playoffs?

2. Can Gilbert keep building momentum after its breakout season in 2023?

After going 1-17 over the 2021 and 2022 season, Graham Lundt (pictured) will try to lead the Gilbert football team to its second-consecutive winning season in 2024.

3. Will Ballard be able to reload after suffering some big losses with the graduation of 1,000-yard rusher Eli Rouse and top receiver/defensive back Chance Lande from last year’s 4A playoff team?

4. Will Nevada survive the loss of 1,500-yard rusher Cason Stevenson and top receivers Kyle Kingsbury and Jacob Khounsourath in its quest for a sixth-straight trip to the 3A playoffs?

5. Can Roland-Story make it two winning seasons in a row despite heavy losses to graduation with the departure of top rusher Hesston Johnson, versatile back/receiver Jonovan Wilkinson, top defensive back Boaz Clark, big receiving threat Riley Larson and others?

6. With the return of most of its top offensive playmakers, can Colo-NESCO reach the playoffs?

7. Will a big leap in experience enable Collins-Maxwell to break its trend of 3-6 seasons (three in a row) and challenge for a winning record?

8. After finishing the 2023 season with 916 yards passing and 878 rushing, can Ames dual-threat quarterback Cameron Cantonwine top 1,000 yards in both categories this…
