Running off at the typewriter …
Truly, the more things change, the more they stay the same.
Even though the Michigan Wolverines got nailed months ago for spying; they’re still lying and denying. And even though the NCAA just sent Michigan a notice of allegations in which former head coach Jim Harbaugh, current head coach Sherrone Moore and other assistant coaches were charged with trying their best to cover up the rampant sign-stealing scandal, Harbaugh still maintains he was unaware of the cheating that was going on within his own program.
It should be noted that the NCAA hammered Harbaugh on Wednesday with a four-year show-cause penalty for a separate case in which the former Michigan coach was illicitly recruiting during the COVID-19 pandemic and misled the NCAA (lied) during the investigation. The show-cause penalty effectively bans Harbaugh from college athletics for four years.
Not that he cares because he has already won his national title and high-tailed it to the NFL, where he is the new coach of the Los Angeles Chargers. When he was asked about the sign-stealing scandal earlier this week, he again refused to take any responsibility.
“Never lie. Never cheat. Never steal. I was raised with that lesson,” Harbaugh said at a brief news conference earlier this week, appearing to read from a prepared statement. “I have raised my family on that lesson. I have preached that lesson to the teams that I have coached. No one is perfect. If you stumble, you apologize and you make it right. Today, I do not apologize. I did not participate, was not aware nor complicit in those said allegations.”
In other words, Harbaugh is a modern-day Sgt. Schultz — the character from the old Hogan’s Heroes sitcom whose catchphrase was: “I know nothing! I see nothing! I hear nothing!”
It’s still unfathomable to me that…
