Penn State football faces an intriguing test Saturday in its 2024 home-opener in Beaver Stadium.
The Nittany Lions will attempt to grow and smooth out their Week One struggles against a better-than-advertised Bowling Green.
Though a four-touchdown-plus underdog, the Falcons do boast an experienced, highly-productive offense that expects to carry them toward the top of the Mid-American Conference this fall. They finished 7-6 in 2023 and opened this season with a dominant victory over Fordham.
They should be able to push No. 8 Penn State just enough for its own good.
The College Football Playoff-hopeful Lions will continue to build their new offense under first-year coordinator Andy Kotelnicki. Expect quarterback Drew Allar to follow his impressive season debut by spreading the ball around better and earlier (only two wideouts caught passes at West Virginia) and for tailback Kaytron Allen to get untracked in the run game.

Penn State will showcase one of the strongest defenses in the country, led by safeties KJ Winston (Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week vs. WVU) and Jaylen Reed, linebacker Tony Rojas and superb pass rushers Abdul Carter and Dani Dennis-Sutton.
Still, this defense should be tested by the passing and running of Falcons’ sixth-year quarterback Connor Bazelak, (40 career starts at Missouri, Indiana and BG) and tailback Terion Stewart (6 yards per-carry average).
