EAST ROCHESTER – Honeoye Falls-Lima struck for a touchdown right before halftime, then pitched a shutout in the second half in a 25-12 win over East Rochester/Gananda on Friday, in the opening week of the Section V football season.
HFL was trailing 12-10 late in the first half when linebacker Sam Martin stepped in front of a pass from Bombers quarterback Ben Newman and returned the interception to midfield. The next play, the Cougars’ Nathan Meacham connected with senior receiver Keaton Yates for a 53-yard touchdown.
Meacham finished with 183 yards and two touchdown passes – both to Yates – on 8-for-11 passing. Yates totaled 152 yards on three catches. Senior tailback Conor Finn added 77 yards and a touchdown on 15 carries.
Newman ended up with two touchdown passes for the Bombers, both to senior Noah Mather.
HFL (1-0) travels to Eastridge for a Class B matchup next week, while East Rochester/Gananda (0-1) is home against Greece Olympia/Odyssey in a non-league game.
McQuaid 27, Lancaster 26 (2OT)
The Knights (1-0) took the lead for good when Xavier Cox scored a 20-yard rushing touchdown on the first play of the second overtime period. A successful PAT gave McQuaid a 27-20 lead.
Lancaster responded when Alex Krupa threw a touchdown a 20-yard touchdown pass on the Legends’ (0-1) ensuing possession, but the hosts’ two-point try was unsuccessful.
McQuaid coach Bobby Bates’ five-time Section V Class AA champs trailed Lancaster 14-0 when Allen Nesmith cut the lead in half on an 18-yard touchdown run. Will DiMarco found Ace Erdmann for a 34-yard touchdown to tie the game at 14 after a pair of third quarter scores.
The game went into overtime tied at 14. DiMarco found Nesmith for a 10-yard touchdown to tie Lancaster at 20 before McQuaid took its first lead in the second overtime frame.
