Instant thoughts on Ohio State football: Never too early to talk Michigan game | Oller

Maybe Michigan should have outbid Syracuse for Kyle McCord?

It’s never too early to talk about The Game, and UM’s ugly 31-12 home loss to Texas has to have Ohio State fans breathing a little easier. Not that the Wolverines were supposed to be anything close to the Connor-Stalions-at-your-service team that won the 2023 national title, but Saturday showed that UM has a quarterback problem.

Former walk-on Davis Warren (22 of 33 for 204 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions) struggled against the Longhorns, who I picked to win the natty – and backup QB Alex Orji must be not much of a passing threat, considering he never attempted a throw. Michigan’s defense didn’t look especially stout, either. November 30 is a long way off, but UM is a long way from putting a scare into the scarlet and gray.

OSU offense surgical early – really – in carving up WMU

Ryan Day wanted a fast start, and the offense obliged. The Buckeyes jumped to a 21-0 lead in the first 14 minutes, and the scoring drives were quick and clinical marvels. The first touchdown, in the opening series, covered 55 yards on six plays and included a Chip Kelly wrinkle with four tight ends on the field together.

The second score covered 75 yards in four plays, with the dagger coming on a 70-yard hitch-and-go from Will Howard to freshman Jeremiah Smith, who turned on the jets, split three defenders and raced to the end zone. The third TD went 73 yards in five plays, capped by a 23-yard dash by tailback Quinshon Judkins.

The 21 points were the most by the Buckeyes in the first quarter since scoring 21 against Indiana on Nov. 12, 2022. The first five scoring drives happened in 2:35, 2:28, 1:39, 1:17 and 2:34. That’s quick.

This is what OSU fans thought they were getting when Chip Kelly took over play calling from Day this season, and shows what the offense…
