The Giants came out completely flat during an extremely ugly season opener and they were embarrassed by the Minnesota Vikings, 28-6, on their home turf.
Believe it or not, Big Blue was in this game at one point, and it looked like their defense had come up with a big third down stop during in the second quarter but a back-and-forth penalty call quickly changed that.
On third down, Sam Darnold rolled out of the pocket and unleashed a throw deep down the field towards Jordan Addison, who grabbed Giants cornerback Adoree’ Jackson as he was attempting to break up the pass.
Much to the disgust of Giants fans and the sideline, officials called Jackson for pass interference which moved the ball 36 yards down the field and converted the 3-and-8 instead of leading to a punt.
Minnesota reached the end zone a few plays later for the go-ahead score and they never looked back from there.
“The ref is sorry,” Jackson told reporters postgame. “He can hear me say that. He needs to be fined just like they fine us on different things. That was a BS call and he knows it. You heard the crowd reaction, you looked at the screen and saw it, he knows he made a bad call.”
Jackson was rightfully ticked off about the call as it appeared Addison was the one who initiated and made them majority of the contact on the underthrown pass deep down the field.
While the eighth-year defensive back will likely end up facing a fine from the league for publicly speaking out against an official, he doesn’t sound too concerned.
“Popped for what?” he questioned. “If the want to come at me for that they need to do a little more fact [finding]. If we get a penalty and they don’t call it on the field, they still fine us. If they get mad at me for speaking the truth, then that should let you know about them.”
