‘We shouldn’t be overlooked’: Lighthouse Christian College enjoys atmosphere of first home game

There’s not much that can beat Friday Night Lights.

But maybe Saturday Afternoon Lights in front of family and friends is a close second.

Nine players from Escambia and Santa Rosa counties are part of the first Lighthouse Christian College football team that is playing its home games on the campus of Lighthouse Private Christian Academy in Gulf Breeze.

For some, it’s an opportunity to play college football straight out of high school – such as Andre Colston, who graduated from Tate, and Charlie Cottrell, who graduated from Navarre. For others, it’s a chance to play college football for the first time, even if it’s been a few years since they stopped playing at the high school level.

And for players like Nate Simmons, from Pace, it gives him a second chance to play college football – and now he gets to do it at home.

“I’m just glad to have the opportunity to play college football again,” said Simmons, who played at Mississippi College a couple years ago.

Lighthouse Christian College played its first home game on Saturday against South Carolina Central Christian College, with the Makos coming out on top, 31-12. LCC is now 2-0 in the early stages of its nine-game slate this season, playing an independent schedule.

On top of a decent-sized crowd at LPCA, there was just something special about being able to play in front of loved ones for several of the local players. Simmons called it “his favorite part” of joining the team at Lighthouse Christian College.

“Just being able to have (family) come out here and watch me play the sport I love, it doesn’t get better than that,” Northview’s Jamarkus Jefferson said after Saturday’s game.

Three of the four touchdowns that the Makos scored on Saturday were notched by players from Escambia or Santa Rosa County.
