Benedictine’s football game that was set for Sept. 14 in Ironton, Ohio with Cincinnati power Archbishop Moeller has been cancelled after the Cadets pulled out of the game, the Georgia High School Football Daily reported Friday.

The story was first reported by Todd Holcomb of the Georgia High School Football Daily and Atlanta Journal Constitution, in a story that said BC backed out when the kickoff time was changed from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. for the game, which was set to be played on Saturday, Sept. 14.

Jack Holland, the Benedictine Athletic Director, was reached by phone on Friday as the Cadets were on a bus traveling to a game at Buford High. Holland confirmed that the game was off, but said “On the advisement of legal council, we can’t comment on the situation right now.”

According to Holcomb’s article, Joe Maimone, who set up the game as the founder of matchmaker Prep Gridiron Logistics, said he was threatening legal action against BC for not playing in the game, which was set to be part of a double header in the Ironton Gridiron Classic. Maimore said his company had invested $10,000 in the game, which was supposed to be aired on the Flo Football Channel.

The Benedictine football team takes the field at Georgia Southern’s Paulson Stadium before a game with Rabun Gap on August 17, 2024.

Benedictine, which has won four Georgia state crowns since Danny Britt took over as the head coach in 2011, entered the season ranked No. 1 in Class 4A by the GHSFD and the Atlanta Journal Constitution. The Cadets, whose rugged schedule was ranked as the toughest in Georgia by Calpreps.com, dropped to No. 5 in the state rankings after a 41-17 loss to Rabun Gap in their opener Saturday in the Erk Russell Classic played at Georgia Southern.

BC is set to play Buford, the top ranked team in Class 6A, tonight.
