Florida football has started fall camp, and the Gainesville Sun’s Kevin Brockway and David Whitley discussed the first week of drills.
Florida is practicing 17 times over 22 days in camp to prepare for the season, which opens on Aug. 31 against Miami at The Swamp (3:30 p.m., ABC).
The big news of the week was Florida Gators running back Montrell Johnson Jr. being sidelined with a knee injury that was scoped. Johnson is week to week in what Florida football coach Billy Napier has termed a “minor” knee injury.
The injury has allowed for increased reps for sophomore running back Treyaun Webb, JUCO running back Ja’Kobi Jackson and freshman running back Jadan Baugh.
Brockway said it’s possible for Florida to share the load in the run game among three or four backs for Miami until Johnson, who rushed for 817 yards and 5 TDs last season, gets back to full strength.
“One thing we’ve learned at Florida whether it be Napier or (Dan) Mullen, it is a share the load kind of backfield,” Whitley said. “It has been the last few years a backfield by committee, and it’s worked pretty well.”
Later Sun colleague Noah Ram joined the podcast to talk UF athletes who won Olympic medals and former Florida All-American hurdler Grant Holloway going for gold in the 110-meter hurdles on Friday in Paris.
“You don’t want to say in the Olympics because it’s a race but he seems predestined almost to win gold,” Ram said.
