Susquehanna is building off a successful season, where it reached the District 2 Class 2A playoffs.
When the Sabers were at their best, they had an explosive offense and a physical defense.
Sophomore Weston Yannone put his speed on display and made a fast impact in his freshman year.
He is coming off a school-record-setting spring as a member of the track and field team and is looking to continue to improve while leading the Sabers in the Lackawanna Football Conference Division III.
“I am looking forward to playing at quarterback this season,” Yannone said. “I have a great deal of trust in my teammates and the coaches. I am still a young player, but I am looking forward to having a good season. Playing last year, I learned that there is no atmosphere like a varsity football game, and having some breakout plays and experiences really helped me.”
Last season, Yannone contributed to a 5-5 record in the regular season in a variety of ways.
As a runner, he had 384 yards and seven touchdowns. When he took over as quarterback, Yannone completed 21 passes for 233 yards. He also caught seven passes for 168 yards and a touchdown.
In a win over Lakeland, Yannone had 80 yards rushing and a touchdown. He also had 53 yards rushing and two touchdowns against Holy Cross, and threw for 95 yards in a win over Carbondale Area that helped clinch the Sabers’ playoff berth.
Yannone also contributed on defense and was selected to the LFC Division III coaches all-star team as an honorable mention as an athlete.
The 5-foot-11, 165-pound Yannone gained muscle in the winter and hit the track last spring. He helped the Sabers win the Lackawanna Track Conference Division IV championship and set a school record in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.14 seconds. He also had a personal-best distance of 19 feet, 6¾ in the long jump.
