DUNMORE — Lakeland is building back after a challenging season, and it took another step.

David Naniewicz threw for 131 yards and two touchdowns, Chase Rosenkrans caught six passes for 97 yards and two touchdowns, and the Chiefs got a spark from an energetic freshman class in a 21-3 battle with Holy Cross on Saturday afternoon at Monsignor Crotti Field at St. Anthony’s Memorial Playground.

Lakeland surpassed its win total from its 1-9 record last season and improved to 2-0.

“It is good to just get a win,” said Rosenkrans, who also had 60 yards in punt returns and a pass breakup. “We made a lot of mistakes, but we are going to correct those. You can see the team is starting to come together.”

The Chiefs also had two lost fumbles, the first leading to a Holy Cross field goal in the first quarter.

Connor Farrell drilled a 33-yard field goal with 5:08 remaining in the first and took a 3-0 lead.

Holy Cross had 31 yards on its first two possessions. Aiden Wudarski had a 15-yard run and a 12-yard run. From there, however, the Lakeland defense limited the Crusaders to 34 yards the rest of the game and had nine tackles for loss.

Dylan Loomis, a freshman, gave the Lakeland defense a jolt with five tackles in the second half. Junior Gavin Roberts and freshman Jackson Pochas each had an interception for the Chiefs.

“I just wanted to get the energy up coming out of the locker room,” Loomis said. “I tried to make some plays. This was an all-around team effort.”

Lakeland responded to Farrell’s field goal with an 11-play, 60-yard drive. Naniewicz found Rosenkrans on back-to-back plays for the final 23 yards and a 7-0…
