Sep 2, 2023; Bloomington, Indiana, USA; Ohio State Buckeyes running backs coach Tony Alford watches warm ups prior to the NCAA football game at Indiana University Memorial Stadium. Ohio State won 23-3.
Tony Alford, the veteran Ohio State running backs coach, is expected to be hired in the same role at Michigan.
ESPN reported Wednesday that Alford had informed school officials that he was leaving after nine seasons and on the verge of joining the staff of the Buckeyes’ archrival.
The 55-year-old Alford, who was first hired in 2015, was the Buckeyes’ second-longest-tenured assistant after defensive line coach Larry Johnson.
Sherrone Moore, who was promoted to replace Jim Harbaugh at the helm of the Wolverines in January, did not retain Mike Hart, the school’s all-time leading rusher who has coached their running backs since 2021.
Ohio State opened spring practice last week, but off this week while the university is on spring break.
