Aug. 17—There are just two weeks remaining before Idaho opens the season and plays actual football.
Today, the Vandals will take part in a lighter scrimmage before getting into the normal weekly routine of the season next week. Heading into the scrimmage, Idaho announced the five team captains that the team voted for on Thursday.
“That’s different than even like all-conference and All-American, which is selected by coaches or media,” Idaho coach Jason Eck said. “This is being selected by your teammates. It is really how you live every day because they’re around you every day all year. So a great honor.”
Junior offensive lineman Nate Azzopardi, junior defensive lineman Malakai Williams and senior linebacker Mathias Bertram retain captainship from last year.
Joining them are senior defensive back Tommy McCormick and sophomore quarterback Jack Layne, who earned the honor this year.
“Tommy McCormick has been a great leader throughout his career,” Eck said. “I think Jack Layne has shown a lot of leadership. So I think those guys will be excellent leaders as well.”
One thing that Eck and the coaching staff added this year was the addition of asking each player to put why they voted for each captain. He said that the players seemed to put a lot of thought into it and had very good reasons to vote for each player.
Azzopardi played in all 13 games for the Vandals last season for a young offensive line that has now become the elder statesmen of the offense. The Pacifica, Calif., native joined Idaho in the spring of 2021 for the shortened spring season due to COVID and, because of that, he still has one more year of eligibility even though this is technically his fifth season with the team.
Williams also saw action in the shortened spring season in 2021, but was redshirted in the fall of 2021 after participating in three games. The…
