What Oregon football’s Dan Lanning said about Ducks’ season opener against Idaho

Fall camp is over for the Oregon football team.

The Ducks have officially reached game week with the season opener against Idaho set for 4:30 p.m. Saturday at Autzen Stadium.

Even though the No. 3 Ducks are opening with a nonconference game, it will still mark the beginning of the Big Ten era for Oregon.

Here are some highlights from coach Dan Lanning during his weekly press conference Monday night.

Dan Lanning did not name a starting Oregon center

The injury to right guard Matthew Bedford has trickled down the offensive line to the center position where Iapani Laloulu was projected to be the starter. But Laloulu might also be the Ducks’ best reserve guard, and he has also been practicing there since Bedford went down.

Starting left guard Marcus Harper II and highly regarded reserve walk-on Charlie Pickard have also been getting practice snaps at center.

Oregon head coach Dan Lanning walks the field as the Oregon Ducks host their annual spring game at Autzen Stadium Saturday, April 29, 2023, in Eugene, Ore.

“Yeah, we’ll see on Saturday,” Lanning said. “There’s a lot of guys that I think can play winning football. You guys want to know every single starter. For me, it’s about how many guys can play winning football for us, and you can see more than one guy in those situations.”

Lanning doesn’t expect Jahlil Florence or Dave Iuli will play

Along with Bedford and redshirt freshman defensive lineman My’Keil Gardner, Lanning said he didn’t expect cornerback Jahlil Florence or offensive lineman Dave Iuli to play either, though he did say wider receiver Gary Bryant Jr., “could be available,” after being limited during camp.

Florence and Iuli are still recovering from injuries. Florence’s injury was to his knee, suffered in November of last season, and Iuli’s is a broken foot suffered during the spring.
