Oct. 4—Next week, the Bemidji State football team will finally have a Saturday off.
This year’s bye week arrives at essentially the halfway point of the season, with no game scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 12.
“For our kids, (it’s) certainly a little bit of a reprieve, break, back off — however you want to look at it — to get them focused at the end of the year,” head coach Brent Bolte said. “Hopefully, we can continue to be in a position to talk about the importance of the following game. … If it’s for conference championship or playoffs or whatever, you’re just hoping to be in the conversation at the end of the year.”
A tough stretch waits for the Beavers after that break, though. Wayne State, Minnesota State Moorhead and Augustana are just a few of the stronger opponents penciled in for the rest of the season.
Then, potentially, it’s onto the postseason.
As it stands, Bemidji State has a 4-1 record (3-1 NSIC) with a chance at adding on one more conference win before the bye week.
“It (would) feel good, it’s going to put us in a good spot in the conference, knowing we have a tough schedule coming out for the next couple of weeks,” wide receiver Aundreus Griffin said. “It’s going to set us right for what we’ve got to do for the playoffs.”
Before the week of rest and everything that follows, though, BSU has one more opponent to take on: Northern State.
“The guys that have been grinding through it, the guys that have been injured a little bit — just as much mentally and physically,” Bolte said. “It’s to get those guys rolling and get healthy. We’ll worry about that all when we get back on Sunday. But for the time being, we’re pretty focused on the task at hand with Northern state.”
This Saturday, the Beavers will travel to Aberdeen, S.D. to take on the Wolves in their homecoming game. Northern State is currently 1-4,…
